The Brazilian government has begun producing condoms using rubber extracted from trees in the Amazon.
Brazil’s first government-run condom factory will produce 100 million condoms a year - fighting AIDS whilst helping to conserve the rainforest at the same time (which sounds like an all-round good idea).
Rubber trees are simply tapped for their latex every few days, so the factory can maintain its rubber supply from one large reserve, which is called the Chico Mendes reserve - named after a conservationist and rubber tapper who was killed by ranchers in 1988.
